A 70-year-old woman with severe aortic valve narrowing and multiple health issues was successfully treated at Manipal Hospitals, Kharadi, through a rare and complex heart procedure. Instead of traditional open-heart surgery, which carried significant risks due to her age and comorbidities, the team led by Dr. Tanmai Yermal (Jain), Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, opted for a minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). To address the heightened risk of coronary artery obstruction, they employed the intricate Balloon-Assisted BASILICA technique, where the patient’s native valve leaflet was intentionally split with balloon and electric guide wires to maintain coronary blood flow. A new aortic valve was then implanted without external stitches, and the patient was mobilized the next day—getting discharged safely on the fourth day. This remarkable achievement highlights the hospital’s expertise in performing advanced, lifesaving cardiac procedures.
